Noon her zaman için güneşin tam tepede olduğu zamanı belirtmez. Roma hesaplama metoduna göre, bir gün, güneşin doğuşundan batışına kadar bölümlere ayrılmıştır. Gece ise dört saatten oluşmaktadır. İngilizce'deki noon Latince'de dokuzuncu anlamındaki nonus'tan türemiştir. Bu nedenle noon, günümüzde öğleden sonra 3'e denk gelen günün dokuzuncu saattir. Ayrıca 14. yy.'da zamanın kiliselerinin bu saatte noon adındaki yemek vakti olmasından ötürü İngilizce'deki noon zamanla sabitleşen bir şekilde günün ortasını ifade eden bir anlama kaymıştır. Ama Benjamin Franklin'in şaka olarak teklif ettiği, bugünkü anlamda gün ışığından tasarruf fikri 20. yy.'da gerçek olmuş ve noon'un anlamı bir kez daha her zaman için sabit olmayan güneşin en tepede olduğu an olarak kabul edilmiştir. Yani bu son uygulamayla noon günün ortası değil güneşin tepede olduğu anı nitelemektedir.
